Networking isn’t limited to formal events—it’s something you can do anywhere by simply being observant, approachable, and helpful. Here are seven tips to enhance your networking skills in all settings:
1. Be Observant and Comment
Everyday situations offer networking opportunities. As Steve Jones says, “You can network everywhere you go if you simply observe situations and comment about them.” Whether it’s a shared experience or something you notice, initiating conversations can lead to valuable connections.
2. Compliment and Connect
A genuine compliment can break the ice and start a conversation. People appreciate kind words, and it opens the door to further interaction.
3. Help Others Make Connections
Serving others by helping them connect with people who can benefit their lives or business is a powerful way to build your own network. People remember those who support them in achieving their goals.
4. Active Listening
In any conversation, active listening is crucial. Pay attention to what people are saying, show interest, and ask thoughtful questions. This builds rapport and trust.
5. Stay Consistent and Authentic
Networking is about long-term relationship building, so be consistent in your efforts. Authentic connections are far more valuable than superficial ones.
6. Use Social Media Strategically
Beyond face-to-face interactions, platforms like LinkedIn allow you to network with people globally. Engage thoughtfully with others’ content, share insights, and be intentional about growing your online presence.
The general advice for social media is to spend 5 to 10 minutes a day engaging with others by liking, sharing, and commenting on their posts. I’ve tried this, though I could do it more, and it’s highly effective! Over time, conversations, connections, and interactions start to increase noticeably.
7. Diversify Your Network
I’ll admit, I’m not naturally outgoing and often have to push myself to meet new people. Having a clear networking strategy like this one has really helped me. Even so, I have to remind myself that networking extends beyond just those in my immediate circle. It’s important to connect more broadly, so don’t just stick to familiar circles. Networking with people from different industries, backgrounds, and skill sets broadens your perspective and creates more opportunities for growth.
Bonus Point: Make sure you fish in the right pond
For years, I was part of a downtown Vancouver networking group, and I learned the hard way that I wasn’t finding the right people. I was fishing in the wrong pond. Of course, you never really know until you get to know people, but be cognizant of the question; is this person or group full of people I like and trust and would like to do business with? And be that kind of person too!
Remember, effective networking is about creating lasting relationships through genuine care, service, and attentiveness, wherever you are.
